Headline
Insights from experts, recent research, and state case studies offer actionable recommendations for advancing medically tailored meal (MTM) initiatives to improve outcomes and reduce costs.
Context
MTMs are meal preparation programs designed for people with serious or chronic conditions. MTMs improve health outcomes, lower health care costs, and increase patient satisfaction. MTM program models, however, vary depending on the range of services offered, target populations, and structure. This resource summarizes findings from a convening hosted by the National Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging on the state of MTM research and profiles three different MTM program models.
Findings
The report presents:
- The opportunity for providers and plans to offer MTM and the research to date;
- The approach, challenges, and opportunities behind three different program models, including programs in Colorado, New York, and Massachusetts;
- Themes drawn from insights of participants at the convening, including concerns about funding and the quality of health care and social service partnerships, research, infrastructure, and coordination across sectors; and
- Recommendations for advancing MTM programs at the local and national levels.
Takeaways
Health care providers and community-based agencies interested in establishing MTM programs can consider the recommendations and case studies presented in the report.
